MARCEL BREUER 'WASSILY' CHAIRS - PAIR
ORIGIN: Gavina, Italy
Edition CIRCA 1960
Designed in 1925 by the Hungarian born Architect & Furniture designer Marcel Breuer.
In the late 60's the manufacturer Gavina, Italy was sold to the American company Knoll and the Bologna brand ceased to trade meaning the early models are an increasingly hard to find item. This pair is in excellent vintage condition with age related patina enhancing the appearance & reflecting the soul of life. Sourced from the original Architect owner in London UK.
The design was revolutionary in the use of materials and manufacturing methods - it is said that Breuer was inspired by the handlebars of his bicycle for the use of steel tubes to build the chair. The Wassily remains revolutionary, mimicking the feeling and assertiveness of a classic armchair while removing all the excess pieces, leaving behind a lightweight, comfortable, and intriguingly transparent chair. Tubular structure in bent and chromed steel, seat, backrest and armrests furnished with original deep brown leather upholstery.
Highly sought after by collectors.
